Diabetes and Your Feet

Diabetes causes nerve damage and reduced circulation that can be hazardous to your feet. Deterioration of your peripheral nerves (Doctors call it neuropathy. ) reduces sensation in your extremities, so you may not feel it when you hurt your feet. Poor blood circulation can also make it difficult for foot injuries and infections to heal. That s why even a small bump or cut can result in serious consequences if it goes without timely medical attention.

FAQ: About Our Footwear

What makes Dr. Comfort shoes different?

Our shoes are specially designed with the input of foot health professionals. They feature extra width and depth in the toe box and forefoot to relieve pressure from key areas of your feet, and they re manufactured using only top quality materials. That makes them great for people with diabetes and other health conditions that affect the feet.

Who are your shoes intended for?

Our shoes were originally designed for people with diabetes. We now offer a variety of comfort footwear styles for people with all kinds of therapeutic needs. See a foot care professional in your area for more information. Find one here.

How do your shoes fit?

Dr. Comfort shoes meet the American Lasting Standards. They typically fit true to size.

Do all your shoes fit the same?

Typically, yes. Dr. Comfort uses one type of construction for all men's shoes. We use two types of construction, Standard and Euro, for women s shoes. Women s styles in our narrower, tapered Euro construction include Delight, Kristin, Vigor, Betsy, Betty, Lily, LuLu, Move, Walk, Paradise, Sunshine, Flute, Breeze and Susie. All other styles are our more rounded Standard construction.

The material and design of the shoe may affect the way your shoes fit.

What sizes are your shoes available in?

Men's shoes range from 6 12, 13, 14 and 15 in all styles. Men's widths range from B to EEEE in all styles.

Women s shoes are available in sizes 4 10 & 11 in all styles, with select styles available in size 10 1/2 and 12. Women's widths range from A to EE in all styles. AA width is available in select styles in sizes 8 11.

What are your shoes made of?

Dr. Comfort uses full-grain leather uppers for most of the shoes in our collection. Select styles are made from nubuck, a buffed leather similar to suede. Other models are made using lycra, a breathable, stretchable material.

Our shoes feature full-leather linings, except the athletic models that utilize a cotton lining.

How can I minimize heel slippage?

The best way to minimize heel slippage is to wear a lace-up shoe. Different lacing techniques can help reduce heel slippage. If a Velcro closure is your only option, placing a tongue pad under the tongue of the shoe will reduce heel slippage.

Dr. Comfort does not recommend the use of heel grippers, especially for people with diabetes.

Are your shoes or boots OSHA/ANSI certified?

Dr. Comfort shoes do not have certification from either OSHA or ANSI. Our Protector boot does meet ASTM F2412-05/ASTM F2413-05 standards.

How much do your shoes weigh?

Our shoes range in weight from 1.4 lbs. 2.5 lbs per pair with inserts. Your Dr. Comfort provider can give you the exact weights of particular styles.

What types of inserts do you offer?

Dr. Comfort currently has three types of inserts. We recommend our gel insert for simple comfort. For people with diabetes, Dr. Comfort recommends either our standard heat-moldable insert or our custom insert, which both qualify for Medicare reimbursement.

What are your inserts made of?

Dr. Comfort's gel insert is made of a proprietary base material with gel in the heel and metatarsal areas, a middle layer of p-cell and a leather-like top cover. Our Medicare-reviewed inserts (heat-moldable and custom) are made according to A5512 specifications using an EVA base and p-cell cover.

What makes Dr. Comfort socks different?

Our comfort socks are designed to keep your feet healthy. Their smooth-seam construction reduces the risk of unwanted friction that can lead to calluses. Anti-microbial odor control and nano bamboo charcoal fibers help keep your feet dry, which prevents infection. And because they re non-binding, they don t inhibit your circulation.

Why should I wear Dr. Comfort slippers?

When you re living with diabetes or other health conditions with foot complications, it s important to protect your feet at all times. Walking around barefoot can put your feet at risk. Bumps and bruises can turn into much worse problems. Dr. Comfort s closed and open heel slippers feature extra-depth construction, protective toe boxes, non-skid outsoles and gel inserts. So your feet are as comfortable as they are safe especially when you re at home.
