The Gita achieves something that few bands on either the local or national levels, they have the ability to use their influences to play more than just one style of music and each style is played well. Not just some generic attempt that some bands try to do. The different genres that they are influenced from include jazz; ska, hip-hop & they even dabble in bluegrass (Which is actually the name of tack 10). Also another prominent influence of The Gita's is Eastern Indian/Hindu - this style can be found on songs like Prelude (Raga) & Raga (Interlude)
The Gita is a Clearwater based quintet. Joran - Vocals, Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Percussion; Joe - Vocals Tenor & Alto Saxophones, Churrango, Flute; Tony Drums, Percussion, Vocals; Dave - Keyboards, Trombone, Percussion, Banjo, Backing Vocals; Rich - Bass Guitar.
Also, the band recruits some of their the friends & family to play to either sing or play violin. One unique guest is Harriet "Nana" Haney who is 90 years old. Harriet sings and plays a Ukulele an early 1900s style song named Redhead. This a great sing along song.
Two of the strongest songs on the CD are Swallow Your Pride and Untitled. Both songs are very reminiscent of Blues Traveler & Dave Mathews. This is actually the prominent sound of the band using either acoustic or clean bluesy style guitar sounds, intricate bass lines and the backing of a saxophone. The songs are well composed and have lyrics that you can sing along with only 1 or 2 listens. These 2 songs are definitely commercially friendly songs.
One of my favorite songs on the CD is Aw, Yeah that has a kind of Snoop Dogg feel. This is the hip hop/rap influence sung by the drummer Tony. This song gives you an idea that this band has a sense of humor and shows that they are serious about their music but do not take themselves serious. The songs pulls out the "your mama" jokes like "Your mama's got a glass eye with a fish in it." Or "Your mama's got an afro with a chin strap". Of course they have to use the phrase "Your mama's so fat, how fat is she"
If your tired of the heavy drop D tuning aggressive sounding bands that has flooded our airwaves in the late 1990s & early 2000s this a must get CD. Feature Presentation is a COMPLETE piece of work not just few good songs with a couple of fill songs to take up space. The musicianship of every member of the band and the songwriting are both excellent and also so is the production of the CD. Feature Presentation achieves what very few CDs do especially on a local level, leave the listener wanting to hear more.
